FAQ

Get Answers to Your Questions

  • Will you teach me how to sew?
No. Some classes are designed for absolute beginners, so even if you have never sewn before you will come away with an amazing creation, but my classes do not teach the basics of sewing.
  • I prefer not to pay online. Can I still book?
Yes - just give me a call on 07311 115357
  • What fabric do I need to bring?
This depends on the class. Each page of the website gives a rough guide of what you will need to provide - I'll email you a much more detailed list after booking. Please pay close attention to the list - if you buy the wrong amount or type of fabric then you might find it more difficult to make your project. If you are unsure, get in touch, and I'll be glad to help - if you still can't work it out there is an excellent fabric shop just a couple of doors down the road! I will provide all threads, specialist parts, trial scraps, toile fabric and construction fabrics, but you are welcome to bring your own if you need an exact match or have a preferred brand.
  • Do you provide lunch?
No, but there are plenty of cafes, supermarkets and local shops just outside, or a kitchen to prepare your own food. I do provide copious teas and coffees, and you can rely on me for a biscuit or two. Please let me know about any allergies, dietary requirements and milk preference if it isn't semi-skimmed.
  • Do I need my own equipment?
No. All equipment is supplied for your use during the course. Feel free to bring your own sewing kit if you want to. If you would prefer to bring your own sewing machine you are welcome to do so, but only if you are confident in its use - I can't teach you how to use and fix it!
  • Whats the public transport like?
The Workroom is right next to the Brixham bus station, with buses every few minutes. There is also a taxi rank just opposite.
  • I'm not very experienced at sewing...does that matter?
Each class is marked with the required skill level: - Absolute beginner: You don't need to have ever touched a sewing machine before - Beginner: Some very basic sewing skills... you have used a machine before - Intermediate: You are pretty confident on a machine and have made a few things. - Experienced: You are a confident sewer but want to develop a new skill.
  • Is The Workroom fully accessible
Unfortunately not. The Workroom is on the first floor, accessed up a flight of about 12 steps. If you can manage these (with assistance if needed), then you are very welcome to attend. If you are confined to a wheelchair, or otherwise unable to use the stairs, then get in touch and we can discuss your individual requirements. I arrange classes in other settings from time to time, so that all can enjoy what I do if at all practical. If you are blind, partially sighted, profoundly deaf or hard of hearing, or have any other disability that may impact your course, please let me know in advance so I can make sure I adjust my teaching for you. Courses are more practical than theoretical, and are taught in very small groups. Carers are very welcome to come along free of charge. Assistance dogs may be brought if needed, but you should know that I have a lifelong fear of dogs, so they will have to be under full control at all times and I may have to teach from the other end of the table!
  • Can I attend online instead?
No - these are hands on courses, taught the old-fashioned way!
  • Is parking provided?
There are several large pay-and-display car parks in very easy reach of The Workroom.
  • My pronouns are they\them, will this be a problem?
Not at all! Everyone is welcome at The Workroom and I'm happy to use your preferred pronouns. Just let me know your preferences on the booking form.
  • I don't sew...can you make me a corset?
Yes! Independent of sewing classes, I also take on private commissions for corsets, costumes, steampunk and period clothes. Get in contact and we can discuss exactly what you want!
  • What happens if I don't finish?
Everyone learns at their own pace. If you haven't quite finished your creation at the end of the course, it doesn't matter. I will give you instruction on how you can complete it at home, or you are welcome to come along to the next 'Bitch and Stich' class free of charge where I will help you finish.
